Them bones, biceps and other bits! Exploring the Musculoskeletal system

The Gregson Community Association (GCA) is an iconic institution in Lancaster, Lancashire that has been key in the cultural life of the city for 30+ years. Covid-19 forced its closure but since, volunteers have been renovating the heritage building and supporting the reopening. Previously run day to day ‘for-profit,’ the centre will now be run as a charity by trustees with all profits reinvested for community benefit. Come along to learn some unexpected facts about your bones and muscles. Why are astronauts shorter after a stint in space? What can your ear bones tell you about your mother? Where have scientists identified a ‘little bean’ bone? Moreover, how exactly do your bones make you feel stressed?

There are 206 bones in the human skeleton (give or take a few). When asked to describe their bones, people often use words like hard, solid or strong. We know that our bones have the ability to repair themselves if they break, but it often comes as a surprise to learn that bone is a living tissue. Bones contain cells that constantly remove and rebuild bone tissue in a process called remodelling - a mechanism is vital for healthy bones. Alongside this event educators of Anatomy at Lancaster Medical School will test the musculoskeletal knowledge of the general public.
